Cycle Speedway is new to us and one we're not tried (but it's on the list). It's not new to the UK though. In the 1920s it took off in the wreckage of post-war cities in Britain. With tracks cleared through the rubble, on bikes not otherwise roadworthy, and under the influence of motorcycle speedway, cycle speedway grew haphazardly as a way for young people to enjoy themselves in cities.
London, with most bomb sites, led in organising races. There were more than 200 clubs in East London by 1950 with the sport spreading across the country. Now it's a smaller niche corner of the bike world but one that looks hugely entertaining with the top riders (like Lukasz who is the current World Champion!) being explosive sprinters - but they also need stamina to enable them to keep going through a long match. Skill levels are high with slick starting, cornering and passing techniques essential with strength is also required during the frequent contact with other riders.

What draws you to the world of bikes?Bikes are my life, whether I want or not. I'm a cycle mechanic by day and a cycle speedway maniac by night. I love finding ways of improving my equipment and nicking novelties from other cycling disciplines.
Describe your current bike set-up in three words: No brakes, No gears, No fear
What or who inspires you to do what you do on a bike? I was drawn to cycle speedway by the motorised version of the sport. I love watching it and I suppose was always inspired by that. Desire to win is the biggest kick though. There isn't a better feeling and no other drive in life. Would love to give the sport a lift, get it out there, spread the word.
